Benefits of Pilates

Pilates focuses on strengthening the deep muscles of the abdomen and spine, helping to improve posture, alignment, stability, and flexibility. By building a stronger core, Pilates can ease musculoskeletal discomforts, such as back and neck pain, while also enhancing overall movement and helping to prevent injuries.

Pilates is also a mindful form of exercise, with an emphasis on breathing, and can be a valuable way to encourage relaxation and improve your overall sense of well-being.

When you come along to my classes, you’ll find a friendly welcoming space where you can safely work on your posture, strength & flexibility. My aim is to help you feel confident about exercise & movement.

I am a qualified Physiotherapist and a certified Mat work Pilates Instructor . I completed my Mat work instructors certificate in 2020 with The Australian Physiotherapy & Pilates Institute (APPI). I am also a member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP), Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) & the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (AACP).

I completed my Physiotherapy degree at the University of Bradford in 1996, & then went on to complete a post graduate Diploma in Rehabilitation studies (Physiotherapy Practice). I worked in the NHS for 18 years before moving to work in the Private sector for over 10 years.

I have experience treating a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, including back pain, osteoarthritis, rheumatological conditions, hypermobility, sports injuries, recovery following orthopaedic surgery & persistent pain conditions (Chronic pain). I am passionate about helping people reach their full potential, and I regularly use Pilates to aid rehabilitation and help prevent future injuries.

Outside of work, I enjoy running & I’m a member of a local running club (Holcombe Harriers) where I’m a UK Athletics qualified run leader. I also enjoy mountain bike riding & swimming, & I’m a member of a local Triathlon Club (Bolton Tri Club).

On a personal note, I have found Pilates particularly beneficial to help me manage a long standing Rheumatological condition, Axial Spondyloarthropathy (previously know as Ankylosing Spondylitis). Improving my “core” strength & flexibility with regular Pilates exercises, has given me much more confidence with my everyday activities, & has allowed me to achieve some of my goals, such as completing the Yorkshire 3 Peak fell race in 2025.

About Me

What to expect in the beginners class:

The exercises are aimed at an introductory level (mainly Pilates levels 1 & 2). The starting position for most of the exercises will be from the “rest position” (Lying on your back), but some exercises may require you to lie on your side or your front. Alternative exercises can be given to those who find these position difficult.

Some equipment may be used, such as resistance bands, soft Pilates balls & weights.

Some of the exercises can be performed on a chair.

What to expect in the intermediate class:

The exercises are aimed at an intermediate level (Pilates levels 1-4) & modification of these exercises may include the use of resistance bands, weight & soft Pilates ball. Exercises are performed in the “rest position”, side lying & lying on your front & there will be a reasonably fast transition between exercises.

What to expect in the advanced class:

The exercises are Pilates levels 1-4 but with a faster transition between exercises, shorter rests / recovery time & the addition of equipment (weights, “over balls” & resistance bands) to modify the the exercises.

  • 10 minutes warm-up, in standing.

  • 40 minutes main body of the class. The exercises are based on those developed by Joseph Pilates but modified so they can be performed by all abilities.

  • 10 minutes “cool down” usually in standing.

The format of the class:

What do I need?

I can provide all the equipment you’ll need for the class (head cushions, mats, bands & balls) but you may prefer to bring your own mat & a small hand towel.

It’s advisable to bring water & wear Pilates socks (socks with a rubber sole).

All equipment is cleaned between classes.

How much do the classes cost?

Classes cost £8 & payment is taken at the beginning of each term.

Blocks are usually 6-8 weeks long.

If you join in the middle of a block, then the price will be adjusted accordingly.

You don’t need to pay for the full block until you’ve tried your first class.

Requirements for the class:

The only requirement is that you are able to get up & down off the floor independently.

I can cater for most musculoskeletal conditions.

I will need you to complete a short health questionnaire / registration form before starting the class. All your personal data will kept confidential & stored securely.
